Nick Names

I have considered it one of my chief failings as a “mommy blogger” that I don’t have cool made up names for my kids on this blog. I know, I should get a life.

The problem is, I am terrible with nick names. I don’t nickname, ever. I named my kids so their names would be hard to shorten into nicknames, and here I am wanting to do it now.

But the Baby, she seems to have solved this problem for me by giving her siblings nicknames of her own. And they love them so much that they tell each other about them.

The Boy has become Yiyah, which sounds sort of like his real name. The Girl is Baba, which is nothing like her name, and I find myself frequently calling the Baby what her dad calls her, Little.

So the question is, are these nicknames good blog names too?

I’m not sure so you tell me.

I even made a poll, fun huh? So what do you think?

  1. I’ve always like your Boy, Girl and Baby names….and think it’s way better than my E5, B3 and R19 months Hahahahahha… But, Baby is growing up so fast. So my vote would be Boy, Girl and Little.

  2. Boy, Girl, and Baby make it easier for me to remember who everybody is (though it takes me a couple seconds to parse GH everytime).

Question. Is the use of nicknames for protection? Or is it just the cool blogging thing to do? Cuz I just use my kids real names. It’s easier for me and it makes it possible to have conversations with people who have only been keeping in touch with me via my blog.

  3. Adam-It’s a bit of both. I prefer to be quasi-anonymous when I blog and I prefer to keep the kids names off of the internet.

To quote a friend, “I don’t want their future bosses to find a record of their poop habits when they google their name in 20 years.” 🙂

  4. I’m so used to your referring to your kids as Boy, Girl and Baby that I’d probably be confused at first; having said that, however, I like the nicknames the Baby has come up with. I could adjust. I think you should go with the nicknames.

  5. I am a big nickname giver, though I dislike my children’s names shortened! It just comes naturally from affection for me. don’t have any idea why. But I have not cleverly named my kids in Blogland either, which would have made sense! I loved the nicknames you mentioned and voted for the second option.

  6. Dear Carrien,

Please keep it the same! It is one of the things that really drew me into your blog. I loved the utter simplicity and non-commercialism of it. The way it is fits your personality, too (or at least the little I know of it 😉 Will you still be blogging in Thailand? Hope so.
